Translational Biomedical Scientist | Systems Biologist | Immunologist | Peptide Drug Innovator
For more than twenty-five years, I have worked at the interface of academic science, biotechnology and translational medicine, with one central scientific question guiding my research:
How do endogenous biological signalling systems regulate human physiology, and how can understanding these mechanisms be translated into innovative therapeutics and preventive health?
I obtained my MSc in Medical Biology from the University of Amsterdam, including a research internship at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, followed by a PhD (cum laude) in Biomedical Sciences at Erasmus University Rotterdam. During my academic career, I combined research in molecular immunology with teaching and supervision of undergraduate, Master's and medical students.
About Me
From Biology to Biomedical Innovation
My early research focused on one of biology's most remarkable physiological phenomena: maternal immune tolerance during pregnancy.
This work led to the discovery that short peptide fragments derived from naturally occurring human proteins possess distinct immunoregulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. These findings contributed to expanding our understanding of endogenous peptide signalling and resulted in an extensive international intellectual property portfolio covering inflammatory diseases, tissue protection, metabolic disorders, infectious diseases and regenerative medicine.
Over the following years, I translated these biological discoveries into therapeutic innovation, contributing to the development of novel peptide-based approaches for immune regulation and disease modification. This work combined fundamental biological research with translational science, bridging laboratory discoveries and practical biomedical applications.
Systems Biology and Scientific Innovation
More recently, my work has expanded towards systems biology and computational approaches to understanding physiological regulation.
Rather than studying individual molecules in isolation, I investigate how biological information is organised across interconnected signalling networks and how these interactions influence health, disease, adaptation and ageing.
This interdisciplinary research combines molecular biology, immunology, computational analysis and translational medicine to identify new opportunities for biomedical innovation while improving our understanding of complex biological systems.
A Broader Biological Perspective
Beyond individual discoveries, my research has contributed to a broader biological perspective.
Traditionally, proteins have been viewed primarily as the functional end products of gene expression.
My work proposes that proteins may also serve as reservoirs of biologically active regulatory peptide information, providing an additional layer through which cells and tissues communicate and regulate physiological processes.
This systems-level perspective connects molecular biology with physiology and offers new ways of thinking about biological communication, adaptation and therapeutic intervention. It continues to guide my research in immunology, peptide science, systems biology and preventive medicine.
Translating Science into Prevention
Today, Ayesha BioMed represents the continuation of this scientific journey.
The same systems-level thinking that has guided my work in molecular biology, immunology, translational research and biomedical innovation is now applied to personalised preventive health guidance.
Rather than focusing solely on disease after it develops, my goal is to help individuals better understand the biological processes underlying their health through thoughtful interpretation of laboratory data, lifestyle, physiology and current scientific evidence.
